The Communications Commission (CCK) has issued another warning to unregistered Sim Card users. According to their latest report, the CCK has given these non-listed mobile service subscribers until the end of December 2012 to register their numbers.
The Commission intends to safeguard mobile phone subscribers from cases of fraud, kidnapping and potentially dangerous antagonistic messages (hate speech).
The move follows the CCK’s earlier plans to start another round of SIM card registration since its first phase of the initiative in 2010. Now the Commission is backed by an amendment to the Kenya Information and Communications Act 1998 which gives them the power to catalogue all telecommunication service subscribers.
In October 2012, the number of mobile phone subscribers in the country jumped 17.5%to 29.7 million from 25.2 million the previous year. This puts mobile phone penetration at 75.4% and counting.
Out of this total, over 62% of Kenyan phone users are registered. This means that over 18 million Kenyans have been chronicled by the Commission. However, the CCK has admitted to having a hard time keeping track of the ever growing number. However, they believe that their ongoing crackdown on counterfeit phones will ease the process.
The Commission has since urged the public to register their lines with their respective service providers as soon as possible.
