Data from Communications Commission of Kenya, 2nd Quarter October to December 2011 Report, shows that users prefer Airtel when it comes to Off-Net calls.
Airtel recorded the highest off-net traffic, at 429,766,670 over the period of October to December 2011. This comes despite the fact that Airtel’s market share stands at 12.79%.
The period under review saw the overall volume of on-net traffic decline by 5.1% points while off-net traffic increased by 5.1% points. The increase in off-net activity and decline in on-net activity shows that the increase in price of on-net above off-net charges had a significant influence on the on-net traffic.
Safaricom Ltd increased its on-net call tariff from KES 3 to KES 4 and increased its off-net call tariff from KES 4 to KES 5. Airtel on the other hand has a standard rate of KES 3 for both the on-net and off-net calls. This therefore makes Airtel to Safaricom calls cheaper than Safaricom to Safaricom calls.
