Wondering why City Council of Nairobi (CCN) stopped collecting your garbage?
Well, it’s because it does not have enough garbage trucks. To be precise; CCN only has 12 garbage trucks. Town Clerk Philip Kisia says the council had 250 trucks in the 1970s but due to mismanagement of the council the number of trucks has reduced drastically.
The last time CCN collected garbage was sometime in the 90’s and you virtually paid nothing for the service. CCN had incorporated the garbage collection fee with that of water and sewerage. Whenever you paid the water and sewerage bill it was inclusive of garbage collection. The council used to collect garbage twice a week.
Since CCN has been unable to deliver on this, private entities have assumed the responsibility.
For a service that was once virtually free, Nairobi residents are obligated to Pay between KES 150 to KES 250 for garbage collection.
